The Napoleon Mysteries crime series was conceived more than 30 years ago, when Chief Inspector Robert Napoleon was created, based on one of author David Oakley’s first bosses in the early days of his journalistic career shortly after he graduated from university.

Murder in My Dreams - the second book in the series – is planned for publication in September. Kindle, paperback, and hardback versions can be bought on Amazon. It follows the first book Death on The Golf Course, which was published in 2022 and is also available on Amazon.
Death on The Golf Course - the first book in the series - took 28 years to finish in a writing marathon that involved many stops and starts, disruptions from a demanding day job in journalism and the pressures and commitment needed to bring up three children. In hindsight, it was perhaps a mistake to start writing a novel a week before the birth of a first child.
Fortunately, David managed to write the second book a little more quickly...
...a year is a much more acceptable timespan.
The third novel in the series is planned for publication in 2024 with more books to follow.
Any credit for both books must be attributed to David's wife Sam, an excellent editor, proof-reader and sounding board as well his daughter Miranda, who has provided exceptional illustrations.
Ben King also deserves praise for his skills as a designer, producing fabulous covers for the books. His knowledge of the media and publishing industry, has proved invaluable.
Writing a novel is an extremely time consuming, emotional and often draining experience. There are many false starts, agonising over plot and characters and constant doubts over the quality of the writing and value of the project. But, once the last draft is finally completed and the writer feels confident the book can be published without fear of embarrassment or ridicule, it is also one of the most satisfying experiences.
If people draw even a modicum of satisfaction and enjoyment from reading the books as the author did in writing them, then that would be considered a success. And if readers have thoughts or suggestions on the characters, plot or writing style or how they think the series should be developed, the author would love to hear from them.
